Coffee from the heart of Tanzania

DEATH BECOMES US

Death Becomes Us is a series of three books featuring three classic children’s fairy tales with a sinister twist. I have always been fascinated with the horror genre and reading creepy stories, and wanted to combine this interest with nostalgic characters and stories I grew up with. This collection includes the story of Alice in Wonderland, Little Red Riding Hood, and Hansel and Gretel. Death Becomes Us is a re-imaging of these fairy tales where the heroes share a dark and bloody fate compared to their original story.
Character Illustrations
I designed each character as well as their respective cover illustration with a dark and bloody approach. I chose to redesign classic children stories to juxtapose their lighthearted tale with my gory aesthetic. Each of my design draws inspiration from a dark component from their original story that I exaggerated. For example, In Hansel and Gretel, instead of eating the house made of candy, they eat each other. Little Red Riding Hood is prepared to battle the wolf, and Alice becomes demented and psychotic just like the world she enters.

KOFFIRI COFFEE

KOFFIRI COFFEE

For this project, students were asked to design the branding and packaging for a food product from a country outside the United States. As an avid coffee drinker, I decided to package coffee grown and harvested from Tanzania, a country I was unfamiliar with. In doing research, I was inspired by the country’s bold textiles, natural landscapes, and agricultural practices and wanted to integrate these elements into my design. From this, I created “Koffiri Coffee”, a company who strives to provide the finest quality coffee from Tanzania. My goal was to design a brand that was sophisticated, bold, and authentic to the culture of Tanzania.

Approach

My main objective throughout this project was to create a unique and exciting brand and design that carried the authentic essence of Tanzania. I was immediately inspired by Tanzania’s bold and vibrant textiles, which often featured geometric patterns. I integrated their textile design into my logomark, which is also a monogram of the letter “K”. I chose a warm and saturated color palette to highlight the country’s warm climate and natural landscape. The name “Koffiri” is a combination of the english word “Coffee” and Swahili word “Tajiri” meaning rich, which emphasizes the brand’s elevated and sophisticated taste in coffee. The typeface Futura was chosen for it’s simplistic geometric forms, to establish a connection with the overall mark.

I wanted the package design of my product to reflect the country that the coffee originated from. I chose to design the package with a kraft paper texture to emulate the earthy tones of Tanzania's geography. Additionally, the shape that the pattern rests within resembles the shape of Mount Kilimanjaro, an iconic plateau mountain in Tanzania.
